About
Akhand Jyoti started curing blindness in December 2005, concentrating principally in Bihar. Akhand Jyoti is now one of the top five eye hospitals in India, providing cataract surgeries, specialty treatment for glaucoma, retinal issues and paediatric eye care, as well as refractive error correction.
Akhand Jyoti is dedicated to eradicating Bilateral Blindness and has established Vision Centers (VC) in areas where they’ve conducted over 50,000 surgeries. They aim to expand these centers across Bihar to achieve their goal of eliminating avoidable blindness by 2022. In collaboration with Akhand Jyoti, Joy of Helping will open 6-7 vision centers in strategic districts in 2021 to combat blindness in Bihar.
Vision centers play a vital role in early eye care intervention. Over 90% of patients can receive full treatment at these centers, with less than 10% requiring referrals to the base hospital for advanced care or surgery.
Work
Vision Centers:
Vision Centers are small, permanent facilities established to offer primary eye care services to semi-rural and rural communities. These centers are operated by ophthalmic assistants who, with the aid of telemedicine, can connect patients with ophthalmologists at the base hospital for consultations and treatment. For complex issues, patients are referred to the hospital. Research shows that permanent eye care facilities in rural areas encourage people to seek early treatment for vision problems, preventing visual impairment and allowing them to remain part of the workforce.
This proactive approach to eye care makes vision centers an essential part of an eye care institution’s outreach efforts. Over 90% of patients treated at these centers can receive full care on-site, with less than 10% requiring referrals to the base hospital, usually for surgery or advanced investigations. Vision Centers have successfully reached over 90% of those in need of eye care within four years.
To address the needs of the large population in each district of Bihar, it’s crucial to establish 10-12 Vision Centers in every district, creating a lasting legacy of community eye care units in the region.

The telemedicine app is tailored for rural eye hospitals in Bihar and Eastern Uttar Pradesh, where patients face challenges like overcrowding, long waiting times, and travel expenses. Many patients are daily wage earners, making these issues even more burdensome.
