Amrita Centre Kenya, part of the M.A. Math Charitable Trust, collaborates with AYUDH Kenya to support various projects aimed at improving the lives of communities in Kenya over the past decade.
The Kenya Society for the Blind, in collaboration with The Lions Club of Nairobi – Huru, Amma Foundation, Kavali, and Safaricom Foundation, initiated the White C(r)ane Project at Kilimani Primary School in Nairobi.
This project aimed to distribute over 20,000 white canes to visually impaired individuals nationwide.
The project’s goal was to provide 15,000 white canes to blind school children by 2020, covering all districts in Kenya. To achieve this, they have collected data on the number of blind children in each district and the blind children’s schools in those districts.
A white cane is a device that aids individuals who are blind or visually impaired by allowing them to navigate their surroundings, detect obstacles, and identify orientation marks. It also serves as a visual indicator to others that the user is blind or visually impaired, prompting appropriate assistance and care.
Joy of Helping had contributed 15,000 white canes to this initiative, but their distribution was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The expected impact was to distribute these canes to blind school children across all districts of Kenya by 2020, with data collected to identify the number of blind children in each district.
