Bringing Health Care to Rural Women: Our Journey

In the remote villages of Kutch, India, where dusty paths whispers through barren lands and access to basic healthcare is a hope and dream, women have endured for years in quiet. Health issues like prolapsed uteri and large fibroids, often claimed as “normal” after home births, have afflicted rural women, depriving them of Safety, dignity, and health. In this torment, Joy of Helping becomes the voice for the voiceless, we are committed to reshaping this narrative, bringing vital gynecological care and education to these neglected communities. Our journey is marked by frontline partnerships and relentless determination, is changing lives one camp at a time.

With two decades of experience, Joy of Helping has carried gynaecological camps in collaboration with the Bhojay Trust, conducting 850 life-changing operations since 2003. These camps noticed a significant gap in rural India, where women lack awareness about healthcare facilities and education related to gynaecological conditions, menstruation, and menopause. Many women, shaped by cultural norms and economic hardship, faced severe health issues without seeking any help, assuming pain is an unavoidable part of womanhood. Our programs challenge this mentality, offering medical care and knowledge that empower women to recover their health.

A beacon of hope was a story that was a reminder, In a small village in Kutch, we met Sarita, a 38-year-old mother of three who had lived through a prolapsed uterus for years. Among rural women this condition was common due to repeated home deliveries without medical support and assistance, which left her in constant pain, unable to work or care for her family. Embarrassed and uninformed that treatment was possible, Sarita had normalized her pain. During one of our gynecological camps in 2019, our team, alongside Bhojay Trust doctors, offered and performed a free surgery that healed her condition. Today, Sarita runs a small tailoring business, an expertise she acquired through our women’s empowerment program, and expresses her story to encourage others to seek care and help. Her journey is a sign to the power of targeted, humane program.

The struggles these women face are immense. In rural Kutch, healthcare facilities are rare, and cultural stereotypes around women’s health silence open conversation. Many women lack basic knowledge about menstruation or menopause, causing to neglect conditions that impact their quality of life. Poverty worsens the issue, forcing families to  choose food over medical care. Our gynecological camps, supported by Joy of Helping since 2003, have filled this gap by bringing doctors and volunteers directly to these communities. Beyond surgeries, we provide education workshops to simplify the motive and importance of women’s health, empowering women to advocate for themselves.

The impact is undeniable. Since 2003, our partnership with Bhojay Trust has restored women’s ability to live with dignity. In 2021 alone, we sponsored free eye camps and cataract surgeries at Divyajyoti Eye Hospital, supporting our gynecological projects by addressing curable blindness, a condition that excessively affects women in rural areas. These initiatives, funded through our commitment to 100% efficient implementation of donor contributions, ensure that every penny offers better quality of lives.

As we expand our network of NGOs, our purpose is to reach more women like Sarita, providing not just medical care but hope for a stronger future. By sharing stories, not just spreadsheets, we bridge donors to the human demographic change of their kindness. Together, we are building a world where no woman suffers in quiet, a world where health and dignity are within reach for all.
