Mucormycosis, dubbed “Black Fungus”, is a very rare but potentially fatal condition. Black fungus is caused by mold found in damp environments like soil compost and can attack the respiratory tract. It is not contagious and does not spread from person to person.
More than 8,800 people in India have now been reported with mucormycosis and 219 have lost their lives. States across India have begun declaring a “black fungus” epidemic as cases of the fatal rare infection shoot up in patients recovering from Covid-19.
