About 500,000 children become blind each year, which is one child every minute.
About half of these children die within one or two years of becoming blind.

“Disability is not a brave struggle or ‘courage in the face of adversity.’ Disability is an art. It’s an ingenious way to live.”

Neil Marcus

In India, a significant portion of the youth population faces the daunting challenge of pursuing education while coping with single or multiple disabilities.

Various structural factors, including caste, gender, religion, and poverty, compound the difficulties associated with disability. Despite these challenges, people with disabilities in India demonstrates remarkable resilience, transcending these divisive factors. However, it’s important to note that common threads define their lives, primarily characterized by poverty and marginalization from mainstream societal mechanisms.

According to a 2019 UNESCO report, out of the 7.864 million children with disabilities in India, three-quarters of those aged five years or older do not enroll in any educational institution.

Specially-abled students who lack access to education or vocational training often find themselves leading dependent lives, and unfortunately, they are sometimes abandoned by their underprivileged families who cannot afford to provide care for them into adulthood.
